Public Toilets / Bathrooms
Yes, this is a serious page!! Especially so, since the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea decided to close the old victorian ones some years back - they were dirty yes, but at least you could find them!!
There are now 2 new ones, both single seaters you might say ... and something of a tourist attraction, they are slick, self cleaning and fully automated, one is located right by me and all day long I spot friends, cameras steady and ready to snap their pals as the door panel rotates to let them out!!
... of course like so many modern gadgets, they are often out of order!! But for the record, here they are:
- Portobello Road meets Lonsdale Road
- Portobello Road meets Tavistock Place
... and that's it, we now have to get creative!!
Of course, you wouldn't be the kind of person who would go into a pub and use the facilities without buying a drink or make likewise use of a coffee shop ... and I know for sure that you're also not the kind of person that would go through a door that said no entry ...
... but I think you could be the kind of person that likes trivia, so with that in mind, here are a few entirely unconnected portobello facts.
- Admiral Vernon Arcade: did you know that if you were on the lower ground floor checking out the dealers and you walked to the back left corner of the arcade you would see a door that said: toilet for traders only, not only that, but, there is no external lock and nobody cares if you walk through it.
- Duke of Wellington Pub: did you know that if you went through the door, walked towards the eating area and took the stairs you see on your right, that they would lead to a pair of lovely wood panelled doors marked Ladies and Gents
- Portobello Star Pub: this is a long narrow pub, did you know that if you walked straight to the back you'd find the bathrooms ... this one only for the brave, as it is quite the local hangout and looks a bit scary.
- Coffee Shops: did you know that there is a Cafe Nero, Starbucks and Manhatten Coffee Shop all on Portobello Road, obviously all designed in the same studio as each one has clearly marked bathrooms in a similiar place towards the rear.
There are several distinct sections of the market ...
- Antiques Section - from Chepstow Villas to Elgin Crescent
- Fruit and Veg - Elgin Crescent to Talbot Road
- New Goods - Talbot Road to the Westway
- Fashion Market - Street in General and Westway Area
- Second Hand Goods - Westway to Goldbourne Road
